Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these treatments must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
